Where it runs
Tesla removed the in-car monitor in Dallas and Houston on April 18, 2026, Miami on July 3, Orlando and Tampa on July 21. In the San Francisco Bay Area a safety driver is still required by California rules. Trackers note that only part of the fleet runs without a monitor; Tesla has published no fleet count.
The Cybercab
The two-seat Cybercab, with no steering wheel or pedals, has charged fares in Austin since September 3, 2026. That day NHTSA opened audit AQ26002 into Tesla's self-certification against FMVSS 101, 102, 108, 111, 126 and 135. Tesla holds no Part 555 exemption, the route Zoox took. An audit is an investigative step; no recall or stop-sale has been ordered.
School zones
A petition filed in late September 2026 alleges speeding in active school zones. NHTSA opened file DP26010 on October 9, covering about 1,000 vehicles; four incidents, no collision or injury. The agency has not yet decided whether to open a formal investigation.
